The beer gets top billing:

Becky and Andy -
Mad Hatter The Mad Hatter, on the southeast corner of 7th and New Hampshire, had long been a 3.2-beer bar for KU fraternity/sorority types.  You can see in these photos some of the Alice-in-Wonderland-themed murals on the wall, at least the White Rabbit.  The bandstand was long and narrow and directly behind the bar; the band, looking down, would be looking at the bartenders.
I don't know why Brad's photo isn't in this series...

K.U. or one of its agencies would pay for these short outdoor "concerts".

Red Baron 1 Red Baron 2

The Red Baron was a rather large and newish 3.2-beer bar on the south side of 23rd Street, run by an adventurous guy named Jim Smith.

I remember seeing Buddy Rich and his big band there (I didn't like them too much, as all the tempi were rushed), and Willie Dixon another time (liked them a LOT).

Anyway, we had good crowds and good times there, the pinnacle of which was warming up for Muddy Waters for three nights.

I would return to the same building, rebranded as the Billy Spears Country Playhouse, four nights a week into the wee hours, around 1980.

These photos were taken, I would guess, in the late Summer of 1972.

Not sure where/when the picture above was taken.

$1.50 to get in - two bands and free beer?  Wow!
